LEAF BURNING INFORMATION

The burning of leaves is permitted on WEDNESDAYS and SATURDAYS during the months of OCTOBER, NOVEMBER, DECEMBER, and from APRIL 15 through MAY 30 from 10:00 A.M. until 6:00 P.M. The burning of anything other than leaves, plants, or shrubs is a violation of City ordinance. It is illegal to burn trash, garbage, or other disposables at any time. The Police Department tickets violators. Burning leaves on the street damages the asphalt. Leaf burning must be done in a container.

In the Fall, the City provides a leaf vacuum service for leaves raked to the edge of the yard. Leaves should NOT be raked into the street or on the curb as this causes clogging issues within the City’s drainage system. Leaves raked into the street or on the curb are a violation of City ordinance.

RESIDENTIAL WASTE COLLECTION

Republic Services is the residential waste collection (trash) company in Alton. Their phone number is 618.656.6883. There is no trash pick up on the following holidays: New Years Day, Memorial Day, July 4, Labor Day, Thanksgiving, and Christmas. Yard waste is NOT always picked up the same day as trash. Republic service does offer 1, 95-gallon yard waste container at no cost. To order call customer service for that delivery, or you can use biodegradable yard waste bags or your personal 32–35-gal carts marked with a RED “X” for your yard waste disposal.

DO NOT PUT IN YARD WASETE IN RECYCLE OR TRASH CARTS. Yard waste service is year-round at the curb.
