DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION

The City’s Legal Department is established pursuant to State Statute and City Code. It consists of the City Attorney and the Corporation Counselor and such assistants as may be authorized by the Mayor, with the consent of the City Council. The Corporation Counselor shall counsel and advise the City Council, Mayor, and Department Heads of the various City departments. In addition, the Corporation Counselor shall prepare or revise ordinances when requested by the Council or any committee thereof. The Corporation Counselor prepares all contracts and agreements of which the City is a party. The City Attorney shall prosecute all violations of the City Code, prosecute cases for the demolition of dangerous structures, and shall represent the City in any suits or causes of action of which the City may be a party. The duties of the Corporation Counselor and City Attorney may be shared between them or their respective assistants, as directed by the Corporation Counselor.

Current duties include attending all meetings of the City Council, Committee of the Whole, and various committees and commissions of the City.
