DEPARTMENT DESCRIPTION
The Purchasing Department is committed to the principles of open competition and fairness. Working with our customers, we strive to ensure that our community receives the best value for the tax dollars that are expended.
In order that staff and vendors may schedule their time more productively, please contact our Department.
The City of Alton encourages maximum competition and promotes opportunities to participate in the competitive process. Toward that end, we encourage interested vendors to register to do business with the City. To register please use the Vendor Registration Form.
While every effort will be made to keep this website current, interested parties are advised to contact our office with questions and for official copies.
The City of Alton invites all interested and qualified bidders to participate in contracts with the City. Interested vendors/contractors may view current bids by clicking on the “Current Bids” link at the bottom of this page. A notice to bid is published in the legal section of the Alton Telegraph and the City of Alton’s website.

One of the most important factors in determining what the City Buys is the quality requirement of the department using the service/product. This quality requirement is not necessarily the best or the cheapest item. The City determines quality by need and application; the items deemed to be the most advantageous to the City and best suited.
All sealed bids are opened and read publicly. You are invited to attend a bid opening at any time.
Bids are then tabulated and evaluated, with a recommendation made to the City Council for the award.
