Description: The Alton Municipal Band preserves its rich heritage of Concerts in the Park since 1891. Concertgoers enjoy weekly themed free concerts by area top musicians and vocalists. Children attending concerts are invited to participate in a parade around the park organized and lead by group volunteers from area organizations, such as Junior League of Greater Alton, Alton Symphony Orchestra, Senior Services Plus, and the Boys and Girls Club. At each concert a lucky child is selected to conduct one of the marches while the rest of the children have fun marching in the parade around the park. The Concerts in the Park program is a 9-week summer series of performances on Thursdays at 8pm at Riverview Park in the gazebo and Sundays at 7pm at Haskell Park in front of the historic Lucy Playhouse. Board members audition musicians each season for placement and work closely with the Alton Park and Recreation Department to make sure the audience and members of the band experience an unforgettable evening of music with friends and family. The footpad of the parks allows for space to spread out with lawn chairs and enjoy listening to some of the best music around. Board members oversee an operating budget for the Alton Municipal Band funded by a city tax levy that provides employment opportunities to area top musicians.
